This stunt is nothing but an attempt to deflect attention from the real genocide in Gaza. Highlighting that on Elon’s and his band of followers has had me shadow banned on Twitter. Donald Trump has once again dragged South Africa into his culture war fantasy, reviving the tired and false claim that white South Africans are the victims of “genocide.” Let’s be clear: there is no white genocide in South Africa. What there is, is violent crime, a lot of it. But the majority of victims are not white. They are Black South Africans.

Here’s what the numbers actually say.

Whites make up about 7.7% to 9% of South Africa’s population. According to data from the South African Police Service and independent crime analysts, less than 0.1% of violent crime victims in the country are white farmers. In total, whites account for around 0.3% to 0.5% of all murder victims. The idea that they are being targeted for extermination is not only false—it’s a racist dog whistle that ignores the suffering of the vast majority of South Africans.

Every year, nearly 190,000 Black South Africans die due to violent crime, poverty-related conditions, or state neglect. The root causes go back to apartheid, which deliberately impoverished and dehumanised the Black majority for nearly a century. And yes, let’s not forget who supported apartheid: the United States. Ronald Reagan vetoed sanctions. U.S. corporations profited from it. Trump himself once criticised Nelson Mandela and praised South Africa’s white minority rule. His interest in South Africa was never about justice, only about white fear and white power.

If Trump wants to talk about racially driven violence, he should start at home.

In the United States, more than 1,500 unarmed Black men are killed by white police every year, often without any consequences. The majority of racially motivated hate crimes in the U.S. are committed against Black people. Black Americans are more likely to be stopped, searched, arrested, and shot, even when unarmed and compliant.

The prison population in America is over 2 million people. Nearly 70% of them are Black or Latino. The “land of the free” leads the world in incarceration, largely thanks to the manufactured war on drugs and the prison industrial complex, a system that profits from the bodies of Black men.

Meanwhile, Trump’s allies in Congress and on the far-right cheerlead for Israel’s ongoing apartheid against Palestinians. The same people who cry “white genocide” over non-existent threats in South Africa stay dead silent as Israel bombs refugee camps, starves entire populations, and builds racial colonies on stolen land. If genocide is happening anywhere, it’s in Gaza, not on a white-owned farm outside Johannesburg.

Trump’s fear-mongering isn’t about South Africa. It’s about elections. It’s about fueling white grievance, energising the far-right, and building a political narrative where white people are always the victims, no matter how much power they hold. It’s going after South Africa for daring to join BRICS, for daring to take apartheid Israel to the International Criminal Court.

The truth is simple. South Africa has problems, deep ones. But the lie of white genocide is not a solution. It’s a distraction from the real violence Black people face every day, in South Africa and in the United States. It’s a lie built to uphold the very systems of white power that caused these problems in the first place.
