Early this morning, a large-scale coordinated attack targeted five Russian air bases. Ukrainian forces carried out the operation, reportedly using long-range drones. According to initial reports, 41 Russian military aircraft were destroyed or heavily damaged. Among them were strategic bombers and AEW&C (Airborne Early Warning and Control) planes.
The targeted airfields included Olenya, Dyagilevo, Ivanovo, Belaya, and Voskresensk. The Russian Ministry of Defense has not yet confirmed the exact number of losses, but satellite imagery and sources on the ground suggest the attack resulted in significant damage.
Strategic bombers like the Tu-95 and Tu-22M, if confirmed destroyed, are central to Russia’s long-range strike capability. AEW&C aircraft are also critical for coordinating air defense and providing battlefield surveillance.
The scale and coordination of this operation suggest an increase in Ukraine’s ability to carry out strikes deep inside Russian territory. There is no official confirmation of NATO involvement beyond existing support, although the technology and planning involved are likely to raise questions about external assistance.
The incident may mark a shift in the nature of the conflict, as airfields further inside Russian territory become more vulnerable. Responses from the Russian government and military are expected soon, and the implications for escalation remain uncertain.
