Decoding Power. Defying Narratives.

Gerasimov Says Ukrainian Forces Suffering Heavy Losses Along the Front

Russian Chief of the General Staff Describes Kyiv’s Efforts to Halt Advances as Increasingly Ineffective

Russian Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov has claimed that Ukrainian forces are sustaining heavy losses in what he described as an increasingly ineffective effort to halt Russian advances along the front line.

Speaking at a briefing with senior commanders, Gerasimov said Russian troops remain on the offensive across most sectors, reporting the capture of eight settlements and more than 300 square kilometers of territory since the beginning of the month. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the remarks were delivered during his inspection of the Center Group, which has been engaged in some of the most intense fighting of the conflict.

Gerasimov accused Ukrainian military leadership of committing personnel without regard for casualties in an attempt to slow Russian momentum. He argued that these efforts have failed due to what he described as disciplined operational planning, centralized command, and the combat performance of Russian units. He also alleged that Ukrainian forces have resorted to symbolic actions, including the use of drones to place flags in contested areas where they lack a sustained presence, actions he said Russian troops have intercepted.

Beyond the battlefield claims, the statements reflect a broader struggle over narrative control as both sides seek to shape domestic and international perceptions of the war. Moscow continues to frame its operations as methodical and advancing, while portraying Ukraine’s strategy as increasingly desperate under mounting manpower constraints. These assertions come as Ukraine faces well-documented challenges related to mobilization, troop fatigue, and maintaining force levels along an extended front.

The military situation is also unfolding against a complex geopolitical backdrop. Western military aid remains central to Ukraine’s ability to sustain operations, but debates within the United States and Europe over the scale, duration, and political cost of continued support have intensified. Russian officials have repeatedly argued that Kyiv’s strategic decisions are shaped more by external political pressure than by battlefield realities, an accusation Ukraine and its allies reject.

Recent comments by US President Donald Trump, who has positioned himself as a potential mediator, have added another layer to the diplomatic environment. Trump has cited high casualty rates on both sides as justification for pursuing a rapid settlement, stating that combined monthly losses could reach tens of thousands, though he has not provided supporting details. Moscow has used such remarks to reinforce its claim that prolonging the conflict benefits neither side and that Kyiv is unwilling to compromise.

Casualty figures remain a sensitive and closely guarded issue. However, exchanges of military remains over the past year, involving thousands of Ukrainian soldiers and several hundred Russian troops, underscore the human cost of a war that shows few signs of imminent resolution. As fighting continues, military developments on the ground remain closely intertwined with shifting political calculations in Moscow, Kyiv, Washington, and European capitals.
