Moscow claims military targets were struck as Ukraine reports extensive aerial attacks.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said on Monday that its forces carried out long-range strikes against military-industrial facilities, airfields, and conscription centers across Ukraine.
According to the ministry, the attacks targeted sites in Kiev, Kharkov, and Dnepr using drones and missiles launched from air, land, and sea platforms. Officials stated that all designated targets were successfully hit.
In a follow-up statement, the Russian military claimed that 16 industrial facilities were struck, including a plant involved in producing warheads for Ukraine’s Flamingo cruise missile program.
Ukrainian authorities reported attacks in the same cities and said air defenses detected approximately 70 missiles and more than 600 drones. Officials also reported partial power outages in Kiev and disruptions to rail services.
During the attacks, Ukrainian media circulated footage showing a fire at a cathedral within the Kiev-Pechersk Monastery. Some reports linked the incident to the Russian strikes.
Russia’s Defense Ministry denied targeting the monastery, stating that the damage was caused by a malfunctioning Patriot air-defense interceptor launched by Ukrainian forces. The ministry suggested the missile may have failed due to age-related issues.
Ukraine has repeatedly stated that it faces shortages of Western-supplied air-defense systems and must carefully manage its stock of expensive interceptor missiles, including Patriot systems.
The Kiev-Pechersk Monastery has been the subject of an ongoing dispute over ownership and control. Ukrainian authorities have sought to transfer church assets from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church to either the state-backed Orthodox Church of Ukraine or state administration.
The latest strikes come amid an escalation in long-range attacks by both Russia and Ukraine. Reports indicate that Kiev is seeking an additional $20 billion in Western support to expand its drone operations.
Last week, Ukrainian strikes reportedly caused significant damage to a museum in Sevastopol dedicated to the defense of Crimea during the 19th-century conflict involving the Ottoman Empire, Britain, and France.
The reported attacks on Ukrainian conscription centers occurred hours after a protest in Kiev against forced mobilisation. According to local media, riot police dispersed demonstrators using tear gas.
