The Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman argues Germany should stop supporting Kiev militarily instead of calling on Moscow to end the conflict.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has dismissed a German diplomat’s suggestion that Russia end the Ukraine conflict as a way to resolve fuel shortages, arguing instead that Germany should stop supporting Kiev militarily. Her remarks came in response to comments by a German Embassy official who linked recent fuel shortages in Russia to the ongoing conflict and urged Moscow to end what she described as its aggressive war against Ukraine.
On Monday, Lena Hillermeier, the second secretary at the German Embassy in Moscow, posted a video on the embassy’s Telegram channel from outside a Moscow gas station. Speaking in Russian, she said that officials in the Kremlin “are discussing ways to overcome the current fuel deficits,” adding that “sales restrictions, imports from abroad, [and] the strengthening of air defenses” were reportedly among the options being considered. She then remarked, “We have a much easier idea – stop the aggressive war against Ukraine.”
Zakharova responded on her own Telegram channel on Thursday, saying that Moscow agreed with the German diplomat’s proposal, but only with what she described as an essential correction. “It is high time Berlin put an end to the aggressive war [it is waging against Russia] by proxy of the Kiev regime,” she wrote, arguing that Germany’s continued military support for Ukraine amounted to participation in a proxy war against Russia.
She concluded with a pointed rebuke directed at German diplomats, writing, “For the time being, concerned German diplomats would be advised to use public transport, where they can also learn how WWII ended and who the Banderites [followers of Ukrainian nationalist Stepan Bandera] are.”
Ukraine has intensified its long-range drone campaign against Russian territory in recent months, striking oil refineries, gas compression stations, and fuel storage facilities. According to Russian officials, the attacks have disrupted logistics and contributed to localized fuel shortages, particularly in Crimea.
Speaking on Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said, “it is abundantly clear that the adversary is seeking to damage our economy, but above all to create an atmosphere of anxiety in society.” He added, “This goal is impossible to achieve,” while maintaining that “Russia’s energy system has one of the highest resilience margins in the world.” Putin also instructed officials to work more closely with energy companies to address local fuel shortages and stabilize supplies.

Moscow has repeatedly accused Kiev of carrying out what it describes as “terrorist attacks” on Russian territory and has vowed to continue systematic retaliatory strikes against military-related infrastructure across Ukraine.
