The U.S. Vows to Impose the Toughest Sanctions in History on Iran

President Trump Declares ‘Economic D-Day,’ Threatening Crippling Sanctions for Dealing with Iran

General Article | August 2026

Washington has launched what it describes as an economic D-Day against Iran, with United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent vowing to impose the toughest sanctions in history in a concerted effort to collapse the Iranian government. Speaking to CNBC, Mr Bessent characterised the campaign as a one-two punch combining an ongoing naval blockade with unprecedented economic isolation, designed to exert maximum pressure while avoiding any renewed kinetic military confrontation. He indicated that the full details of the measures would be formally unveiled at a press conference on Monday.

The announcement builds directly on President Donald Trump’s broader declaration of total economic warfare against Tehran. The strategy targets oil-smuggling networks, financial transfers, exchange houses, ship registries and front companies, while warning third-party nations of severe consequences should they provide any economic lifeline to the Islamic Republic. The Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control reinforced the message by imposing fresh sanctions on ten individuals linked to Tehran.

Mr Bessent specifically called on Beijing to assist in reopening the blocked Strait of Hormuz, noting China’s heavy reliance on Persian Gulf energy supplies. Global energy markets responded sharply to the escalating tensions, with Brent crude oil prices climbing to multi-week highs near ninety-four dollars a barrel amid continued disruptions to key shipping lanes.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi dismissed the American threats as a political diversion from the United States’ own domestic difficulties, particularly its unprecedented national debt and rising interest costs. He argued that doubling down on previously failed punitive policies would only produce further setbacks for Washington. Iranian officials have long maintained that successive rounds of sanctions, from the so-called crippling measures of more than a decade ago through the maximum-pressure campaign and more recent demands, have failed to achieve their stated objectives.

According to a senior Iranian official in Tehran familiar with the matter, Iran is preparing measures intended to inflict economic damage on the United States in the run-up to the November midterm elections. These plans reportedly include potential strikes on Gulf oil terminals that currently serve as remaining bypass routes around the Strait of Hormuz, as well as efforts to disrupt the support network for vessels involved in Iranian oil shipments, with the aim of driving global energy prices higher and thereby influencing American consumer inflation and voter sentiment. Majid Shakeri, an adviser to Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, stated that Iran must raise the level of tension focused on oil before the midterms and that it would not wait passively for an American economic offensive.

China, for its part, has officially rejected the American sanctions. Beijing declared that it does not accept measures lacking a basis in international law and will not comply with the economic warfare campaign initiated by President Trump.

President Trump Declares ‘Economic D-Day,’ Threatening Crippling Sanctions for Dealing with Iran and wants China to join America in its mission.

It makes sense. Both China and USA jealous and worried at the same time. The two countries are the most affected economically by Iran, who, thanks to the war, which gave Iran the perfect opportunity to show case their war industry, sells of Iranian killing toys have increased manifold whilst Chinese and American exports have declined.
